CEDIA member Encore Custom Audio Video of Chantilly, Virginia, helped maximize the client’s budget to provide a family-friendly home theater, earning the Level I Silver Technical Design award for Home Theater in CEDIA’s 2014 Electronic Lifestyles® Awards competition.
The room features a 123” acoustically transparent masking screen and a recessed JVC 4K-ready video projector with 3D capability. It’s optimized for sound quality with eight custom-designed acoustic panels. The bulkheads and soffits were designed to match the room décor, with 4 zones of lighting (featuring a Lutron GRAFIK Eye QS system) integrated into the ceiling (including within the beams themselves). A recessed rack makes use of closet space that was adjacent to the theater.
The original design of the room was for theater use when it was built a decade ago, but the client had converted the space to a music room so the kids could practice in an isolated environment. While it had been intended to be a theater, the space lacked many of the characteristics the client envisioned.
Encore Custom Audio Video used the original layout of the room and offered suggestions based on their experience, such as a perimeter soffit, beams, columns, radius stage, and a concession area to fill wasted space on one outside wall. Encore opened access to a walk-in closet that was adjacent to the theater in order to locate the rack in a space that could be accessed from both inside and outside the room.
The team also used an original recessed portion of the wall when creating custom cabinets to accommodate a popcorn machine, media storage, and a separate room control switch.
Encore Custom Audio Video calibrated the audio and video using the test DVDs provided by the manufacturers. No ISF calibration was done due to the client’s budget.
