My doorbell camera is the one part of my security system that I use the most. There's a constant parade of people and packages coming to my front door, not to mention a few small palm trees in the front garden, so I get dozens of doorbell alerts every day.
That's why I was thrilled to hear that Vivint's latest Doorbell Camera Pro would give me more protection, while cutting down considerably on false flag alerts.
What Is It?
The new Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro is a 1080p HD video doorbell cam with night vision and a 180 degree horizontal and vertical field of view. That extended vertical range is important when you enable the new Smart Sentry feature. It automatically detects packages then enables a special Deter mode to keep would-be package thieves from making off with your stuff.
How Does It Work?
If you've ever used a doorbell camera, you'll find that the Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro meets all the expectations you have and then some. You can see who rings your doorbell and talk to them through the integrated microphone and speaker. The picture is considerably clearer than Vivint's previous doorbell cam, but it's the enhanced monitoring that really puts this device over the top.
Once the Doorbell Camera Pro has been installed, you'll have to do a little work in the app to manually define where you want the camera to monitor for events. In my case, that means I can completely excise the palm trees in the front garden from the camera's monitored area. Now, when it gets windy, I don't keep getting motion alerts from the doorbell cam.
You can manually activate or schedule Deter Settings on the camera. When Deter is on, the Doorbell Camera Pro will play a chime of your choosing and flash, alerting whoever's at your door that you're recording. You can even choose a chime that states you're recording them.
My favorite trick, however, is to have Deter turn itself on when it detects a package. When the Doorbell Camera Pro sees a package delivered, it will take note, switch to Deter mode and keep you updated if someone comes to your door after the delivery.
At first, I didn't think the Deter mode would do much, until I found myself automatically glancing at the doorbell whenever it whistled at me. If someone was coming to your door with the intent of taking a package from the front stoop, they'd have to train themselves not to react, otherwise you'd have full HD video of their face.
I do wish I didn't have to turn off Deter manually once it's been activated. In a perfect world, the Doorbell Camera Pro would have face recognition and know to shut itself off once me or someone in my household brought in a package. It's a big ask, but then we're living in the future, right?
How Do I Get It?
The Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro is available when you install a new Vivint home security system, or as an upgrade to your existing system. While I've heard complaints about Vivint's sales division being a bit aggressive, I've had nothing but positive experiences with their technicians. They're professional, knowledgeable, and willing to do whatever needs to be done to make you happy.
