LAS VEGAS — “Modern Classic,” a remodeled kitchen in a Greenwood Village, CO single-family home, has been named “Room of the Year” by the National Association of Home Builders in the NAHB’s 2018 Best in American Living Awards (BALA).

An oversized island of gray-veined white marble, contrasting gray and black cabinets, white walls and trim and black-framed sliding glass doors to the backyard living space redefine the kitchen in this 1978 custom home, in a remodel by architect/designers KD Project Design LLC and JM Kitchen and Bath, along with builder Malibu Remodeling.

Black-painted cabinets and brushed gold hardware were used to visually define cooking and serving areas, while glazed gray cabinets and white walls transform the rest of the kitchen into a crisp, bright, inviting space. The large black-framed doors contrast with white trim throughout the kitchen and windowed nook to draw the eye to the outdoors. Five staggered crystal pendant lights, combined with an ebony drum shade in the nook, complete the contrast that is the hallmark of this remodel.

“This kitchen remodel uses contrasting colors in a visually beautiful way that also defines the different work and use zones in the room,” said Don Ruthroff, NAHB’s 2018 Judging Chair. “The BALA program celebrates the designers and builders who go the extra mile to bring out the best in a structure.”

Now in its 35th year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry, including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international.
